Does Chritianity make people more selfish?

Do you think Christianity makes people more selfish? Instead of selfish maybe I should say individualistic. I think it does. I think this is part of why the US is so materialistic and focused on consumerism. It feels like it's sort of the negative effect of our emphasis on a personal relationship with God. If I have so much control about whether or not I go to heaven, others have equal responsibility for their personal salvation. I definitely don't think it's right, but I don't know how to change it.

For instance in other countries dominated by other religions, people have little freedom, yet they live in much more of a supportive community. Families seem stronger because each person is deemed a part of unit, and less of an individual. I'm still thinking about why this matters.
