This weekend a couple of major events occurred. First, an organization that I'm involved with off and on, held their national conference. African Christian Fellowship is an organization that started about 40 years, when the first huge wave of African immigrants started coming. The Young Adult association is basically the kids of those immigrants. We are an interesting group because we don't face the same challenges our parents did, because we've been here the majority of our lives, and yet in many ways we are not completely American. The conference was so much better than the last one. It was way more organized and there were probably 2 to 3 times more people involved so there was a lot of energy and momentum. Unfortunately I didn't attend the whole conference because a friend had her first performance, another friend was visiting from out of town and so on and so forth.
One of the things that has really been disappointing for me in my invovlement with association of Africans, is their lack of focus on helping Africans here and back home. It seems like we are so caught up in pursuing the "American dream" that we forget that there is a whole continent of people, the majority of whom live in extreme poverty. We have so many non Africans who are passionately working to fight against poverty, improve healthcare and raise awareness of the different tragedies occuring right now. Anyways, this conference was encouraging, because for the first time someone talked about missions to a country. I guess ACF has been doing a lot of work in the Central African Republic, and there is a desire to get young people involved with that. That is very cool and I'm looking forward to finding out more about it.
